Natural Family Planning (NFP)

Natural Family Planning (NFP) is an umbrella term for certain methods used to achieve and avoid pregnancy. In NFP, spouses are taught to understand the nature of fertility and how to work with it, not against it. NFP is based on scientific research and is highly effective, with no harmful side effects. This method calls for mutual responsibility and communication between husband and wife, and can be used in special circumstances – such as post-partum, during breastfeeding, and pre-menopause.

NFP is completely natural and does not use drugs, devices or surgery. Simply by recognizing and charting the easily observable signs of fertility exhibited by a woman's body, any participant can create a health record. With this information and by applying a few simple guidelines, these observations can be used by a couple to avoid or achieve a pregnancy.

Natural Family Planning: A Highly Effective Method
Couples who conscientiously use Natural Family Planning (NFP) and were trained by a certified NFP instructor are 98.6% to 99% effective in avoiding pregnancy, according to studies by the World Health Organization and others.

NFP has been used effectively worldwide for over 30 years. There are several reliable methods available today that offer women and couples adequate instruction and support in their use. These include the Creighton Model FertilityCare System, Sympto-Thermal Method, and the Billings Ovulation Method. With any of these methods, training from a certified instructor is recommended.

At the Vitae Clinic of Austin, Dr. Jeremy Kalamarides treats women throughout their reproductive years using the information they gather from charting their signs of fertility using the Creighton Model Fertility Care System™. For more information on how to start using this method, please refer to our Classes page.

NaProTECHNOLOGYTM

NaProTECHNOLOGY™ or Natural Procreative Technology (NPT), is the result of 30 years of research by Thomas Hilgers, M.D., an obstetrician/gynecologist at the National Center for Women’s Health in Omaha, Nebraska. This state-of-the-art science has already helped thousands of women throughout the U.S. and in several other countries better understand their bodies and treat the underlying causes of their gynecological problems. NPT provides the best in current medical care, applying diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in a way that is cooperative with the natural functions of the body. It can be used to treat a wide range of gynecologic problems including premenstrual tension syndrome, ovarian cysts, abnormal bleeding, irregular cycles and recurrent miscarriages.

Through a system called NaProTRACKING™, a woman charts her fertility signs to create a medical record. With this information, a trained NaPro physician can treat gynecologic ailments in cooperation with a woman’s natural cycle. The process of diagnosis and treatment involves an ongoing dialogue between the woman and her physician, so that the cause of the difficulty can be identified and treated. Diagnostic testing and hormonal analysis can be performed in a targeted manner based on the woman’s individual reproductive cycle. Through this active participation in her healthcare, a woman becomes empowered to actively collaborate in her treatment. This approach seeks to find the cause for the disease and treat it, rather than suppress the woman’s natural cycle. Many seek the use of NPT as an alternative to treatment using the birth control pill and others simply want to learn about their fertility in a natural manner.

Centers for NPT are located across the country and in Ireland, England, New Zealand, Canada and Mexico. Since NPT is consistent with the teachings of every major religion, it is rapidly gaining in popularity. Furthermore, since women feel so respected during the process of diagnosis and treatment, they are acclaiming the methodology by word of mouth.

Infertility

NaProTECHNOLOGY™ takes a natural and cooperative approach to the treatment of infertility. First, it works toward assessing the underlying causes of the reproductive abnormality. Second, it allows for the treatment of these underlying causes. The causes of the infertility are assessed and treated, restoring a woman’s health. As a result, NaProTECHNOLOGY™ assists couples in achieving pregnancy while maintaining the natural acts of procreation. NaProTECHNOLOGY™ has been proven to be highly effective in the treatment of infertility due to Endometriosis and Polycystic Ovarian Disease as well as other hormonal disorders and premature birth.

Effectiveness for Infertility Treatment

Using a NaProTECHNOLOGY™ approach for the treatment of infertility can be highly effective and even more successful than current approaches to infertility. Below, a life table comparison is shown of the effectiveness of NaProTECHNOLOGY™ (in blue) with a similar non-NaProTECHNOLOGY™ approach taken at Johns Hopkins University. The success rates are clearly better using the NaProTECHNOLOGY™ approach.
